Endometriosis and Pelvic Adhesions
Deep implants of endometriosis within the ovaries can develop into “chocolate cysts.” These are ovarian cysts that are filled with old blood that has turned brown (when opened the thick liquid released looks like chocolate syrup).
Endometriosis can be highly irritating to the delicate pelvic tissues and this chronic inflammation can eventually cause scar tissue (adhesion) formation. Adhesions within the pelvis can hold or pull tissues out of their usual location, sometimes restricting (limiting) their function. When the adhesions involve the ovaries and fallopian tubes, they can reduce fertility due to mechanical obstruction.
